Minister E Jingping Meets with Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management of the Republic of Serbia
On July 31st, Minister E Jingping met with Mr. Branislav Nedimovic, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management of the Republic of Serbia. The two sides made in-depth exchanges regarding the bilateral water cooperation and signed the Memorandum of Understanding.
Minister E mentioned that China and Serbia has established comprehensive strategic partnership since 2016 and the two countries maintain a profound traditional friendship. In recent years, China is committed to building a community with a shared future for mankind and has been promoting the Belt and Road Initiative, under the principle of extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits. Extensive high-level exchanges have been conducted between China and Serbia, which has resulted in fruitful pragmatic cooperation in various fields.
Minister E Jingping pointed out that strengthening water cooperation will benefit both countries’ water resources management and facilitate the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. Thanks to the joint efforts of water resources departments of both countries, the cooperative activities in water field has been embedded into the BRI cooperation plan, which will serve as an important component of China-CEE cooperation. The two sides shall boost policy exchange and experience sharing under the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding, deepen practical project cooperation, and strive for concrete efforts in the partnership.
Minister E Jingping also introduced the flood disaster prevention system in China and current working mechanism. With a long history of water disaster prevention and control, China has formed a comprehensive flood prevention system with Chinese characteristics. The total death toll of flood disasters has been dramatically reduced.
Minister Nidimovic made an introduction on water conditions and challenges in Serbia, and particularly mountain flood disaster prevention and mitigation. Serbia government plans to build reservoirs and other water infrastructure in major rivers within the next five to ten years. High attention will be paid to bilateral water cooperation in order to exchange experiences of water governance. The cooperation on mountain flood prevention and flood warning and forecasting will be actively pushed forward, under the framework of the Memorandums of Understanding between the two ministries.
Officials from relevant departments of Ministry of Water Resources and representatives of the Serbian Embassy in China also attended the meeting.
